Science Curriculum Criteria
Fourth Grade, 1997V. Science A. Circulatory System 1. Can explain the function of the blood and tell the four blood types. 2. Can identify the three main blood vessels: arteries, veins; capillaries. 3. Can take their own or someone elses [sic] pulse. 4. Can identify HIV as a terminal blood disease. B. The Respiratory System 1. Can identify breathing as the process of taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide 2. Can identify these system parts: nose, throat, voice box, trachea (windpipe); 3. Can explain that smoking damages lung tissue which can lead to lung cancer. C. Atoms 1. Can tell that all matter is made up of atoms (too small to see). 2. Can identify the three parts of an atom and their charges: proton (+), nuetron [sic] (neutral), electron (-). 3. Can identify that unlike charges attract and like repel. D. Matter 1. Can identify the three properties of matter: mass; volume; density. 2. Can recognize elements as basic kinds of matter. 3. Can create a solution. E. Can create a circuit. F. Can identify electricity as the flow of electrons. G. Can identify that electromagnets include a magnetic pull of electrons. H. Geology 1. Can identify the properties of each layer of the earth. 2. Can describe the plates movement as very gradual and significant. 3. Can define geology. I. Natural Catastrophes 1. Can tell why a volcano erupts. 2. Can describe the two main mountain formation processes: folding; fault-block. J. Rocks 1. Can categorize rocks as either metamorphic, igneous, or sedimentary. 2. Can distinguish between chemical and physical weathering. K. Fossils 1. Can identify fossils as a record of the earth's history. 2. Can tell the theory of evolution and the story of creation. L. Prehistoric Time 1. Can identify the eras of evolution. 2. Can identify Charles Darwin as the father of evolution.
